The Unfortunates - 'Marriage Courses'

Review By Reagan March & Staff

The W.A M. Awards celebrate the year’s most outstanding independent artists from around the world in multiple genres and categories. "Best Song" and "Best Album" nominations were based on Artistry, Musicianship, Originality, Professionalism, Diversity, and Excellence. W.A.M. stands for "We Are the Music Makers.' The Unfortunates self-titled album was the 2020 W.A.M. Award Winner for Best Album in the rock music category.

The Unfortunates’, “Marriage Courses”, off their award winning album expertly captures the true essence of the alternative rock genre ranging from its instrumental intro, to its strong vocals throughout the song. The buildup of intensity in the interlude priming the song truly sets up the feel for a traditional rock song. The classic groove of the song allows the drums and vocals to shine, allowing the band's impeccable musicianship to thrive. The band is evidently very well trained in their instruments as the flow of the piece is consistent throughout.

The vigorous vocals are definitely a staple of the rock genre and lack no success in deeming “Marriage Courses” as a worthwhile listen. The consistent lyrics explaining, “You lied, that you’re through with him”, can infer that this piece is one delivering a message of infidelity in a romantic relationship. This song is the perfect choice if listeners need to release their anger should they be all too familiar with the subject. The emotional vocals truly allow listeners to feel the pain and disappointment in the singers voice, which is a definitive factor of a great vocalist.

With all of these amazing qualities in just one song, can The Unfortunates be a big new name in popular rock music? The answer is yes. From the texturizing backing vocals to the high-hat transition ending, The Unfortunates have surely created a satisfying tune with their song, “Marriage Courses”. They have succeeded in addressing a relatable topic in society and definitely appeal to rock genre fans with their classic sound.
