Pauline Frechette's "Jewel Box" was the 2020 W.A.M. Award Winner for Best Song in the Instrumental music category.
“Jewel Box” by Pauline Frechette accomplishes a monumental task coveted by songwriters and composers everywhere. Although only consisting of three instruments violin, viola and piano, the stellar songwriting and intimate playing immediately force you to dive deep into a strange and fantastical journey. The strings and piano play beautifully off each other, conversing in a riveting back and forth. The piano is noticeably dark in tone, which allows it to be the foundation frequency wise while allowing the brighter violin to soar.
The main theme makes several appearances. Each time it is introduced in a fantastic fashion, sounding fresh and new with every repeat. Reminiscent of the classical masters of old such as Debussy and Chopin, Frechette builds on classical foundations while adding her own sense of flair. The musicianship from the violin and viola, as well as the piano player, is quite astonishing. In a song that is minimal instrumentation, the highs and lows of the composition allow it to remain interesting throughout. What the song does so well is envelop listeners fully in a world of their own imagination. Trance like in its vibe, "Jewel Box" manages to evoke complex emotions at every corner.
An accomplished musician, Pauline Frechette has established herself as a powerful force in the jazz and classical world. Her new song, “Jewel Box” is a fantastic achievement in songwriting. Its theme evolves from mysterious and longing into intensely hopeful and bright segments, very much like a well written story. From the deeply intimate and masterful playing of the musicians, to the engrossing arranging, Jewel Box is an incredibly powerful song that will give listeners a place to escape during a truly difficult time.
