Old Brave Souls - 'Our Little War'

Review by Daniel Hoyt & Staff

'Our Little War' by Olda Brave Souls is featured on BWH Music Group’s new release, ‘On Peace Street, Vol. One.’ The compilation album is a collection of 19 original songs in various genres by today's best independent artists and songwriters. Sharing songs about peace and social justice, the artist's songs will ultimately remind you of the importance of peace, fairness, love and unity. Filled with meaningful lyrics and exceptional music, this playlist is an example of how music can influence, and even change, people, movements, and society.

“Our Little War” is an indie rock/pop song by Old Brave Souls. The song opens with an electric guitar playing lead and an acoustic strumming the chords. The song is swung, which is primarily heard in the eighth note snare part. The song is in the key of Db; however, it could also be in the key of Ab because the tune ends in Ab and features the Eb chord prominently in the chorus. This chord feels like a tense chord, and borrowed as the five of Ab... meaning the song most likely finished on the V chord. During the bridge, another prominent lead part is heard, which is the keys. In other words, Nick and Luke Yoder know how to write an engaging musical arrangement that colors outside the box giving their music substance for the ear.

The song was mainly inspired by the Parkland Shooting in Florida; although, it also speaks to a variety of other issues in our country at this time. The message is that we have started to feel afraid in our favorite places because anything can happen. The artist is very passionate about this stating in the song, “I’d love to make it through this fucking year alive.” Generally, the Yoder's like to write upbeat tunes, but they felt like something had to be said. “No peace until I can fall asleep on the floor without a lock on the door or a knife tucked up my sleeve,” really captures the feeling within that we are no longer safe in our everyday lives.

Old Brave Souls has written a deeply real song that has meaning for all us. In our everyday lives, at the movie theater and in our school or Churches, we have seen violence happen. This is now “our little war” and we need to change that so we are no longer afraid. Old Brave Souls stepped outside their usual songwriting and it was very well-worth the side-step. In "Our Little War," Old Brave Souls shines and "Our Little War" is a big accomplishment.

About Old Brave Souls

Old Braves Souls is an Indie Rock band from Charleston, SC made up of brothers Nick and Luke Yoder. Their debut album, 'Fields Like Yesterday,' was released August, 2019 across all major digital outlets and streaming platforms.

Originally from Cumberland, MD, Nick and Luke were both active in the Western Maryland music scene in the late1990s and early 2000s. Nick was the drummer for Grill Body Five, a pop-punk band. Luke was a vocalist in Midnight:30 and Plan B, two Hip-Hop groups. After exploring individual paths, they both moved back to the family farm in Charleston where they spend most of their time writing and recording songs in the old barn they converted to a studio.

Old Brave Souls offers melodic, acoustic rock with thoughtful lyrics. While currently playing open mics in their local area and trying new material, the band is already working on their follow-up album, perfecting their studio sound.
