Mikel Capriano - 'Melt With You'
Review by Abby Kenna
Mikel Capriano's take on Modern English’s classic, “Melt With You”, is soft and dreamy, the perfect soundtrack to blossoming romance.
His arrangement builds one layer at a time, first introducing the retro-sounding guitar, then adding a deep bass, twinkling piano, and brushed drum kit. The choice to forgo a standard yet more rigid, aggressive drum kit, allows Capri’s arrangement to remain rosy and light. Additionally, the acoustic piano flourishes add a charming embellishment to the ends of phrases. Subtle details like this are what differentiate Mike Capri’s version of this classic from the original.
“Moving forwards, using all my breath
Making love to you was never second best…"
He also paints a different tale than Modern English by including some unique background vocals. The chorus is widened by these high harmonies, laden with reverb, that allows the melody to stretch across the soundscape as if they were echoing throughout a great hall. Elements like this add to the daydream feel of Capri’s take on “Melt With You”.
The arrangement would lilt flawlessly under a romantic television montage – a road trip, holiday memories, seasons changing but love remaining steady. Similarly, as the emotion of the song blooms, the foundation of the initial instruments continue. These composition details recolor “Melt With You” until we see it through Mike Capri’s lens, through warm and light rose-tinted glasses that capture essence of a love that stops time.
“You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time,
There's nothing you and I won't do,
I'll stop the world and melt with you.”
Reimagining a classic such as Modern English’s “Melt With You” is no easy feat, but Mike Capri has created a sonic daydream in this cover. Soft-spoken and perfectly arranged for a romantic movie, this cover is a refreshing take on the original.
