Kay Soul - 'Baby Boy'

Review by Reagan March & Staff

Kay Soul’s, “Baby Boy” truly captures the essence of a classic 80’s/90’s music feel. The bass synths add for great texture in the piece and set up the musical vibe just right at the beginning of the song. Her smooth R&B feel is very evident in the soothing tempo of the song along with the pulsating drums. The strategically implemented backing vocals add great harmony at various places throughout the piece.

Kay’s soulful voice thrives throughout “Baby Boy” as her vocal nuances are very well executed. The clear tone of her voice allows the listener great satisfaction as the flow of the song is never interrupted. The message exhibited through, “Baby Boy”, is one exemplifying the hardships of romantic relationships. Where a common theme of relationship downfall is infidelity, Kay strives to portray how much of an equal impact the anticipation of pain in a relationship can also lead to its inevitable downfall. Lyrics such as, “Knocks me unconscious, then leaves me breathless, how can love be so reckless”, explain the impact of pain following the destruction of a meaningful relationship.

What truly makes this piece have its natural and inevitable flow is the constant build up to major parts in the song such as the chorus and bridge. The crescendos and decrescendos of the instrumental is what truly creates great musicianship. A listen to “Baby Boy” can determine if Kay Soul is a potential new, big name in the category of R&B music.
