Joseph Milauskas - 'Back to Basics'

Review Written by Victoria Scott & Staff

Joseph Milauskas is from the small town of Middle Village, Queens, New York. He grew up listening to music and was writing songs by the time he was 8 years old which continued through high-school where he attended an all boy's seminary where he gained an appreciation for the simplicity of music. He briefly attended Queens-borough Community College, but left after a year and would go on to work multiple jobs while making music on the side writing songs from personal experiences. Inspired from trips around the United States, primarily a brief trip to Los Angeles, he recorded and released his new EP titled "Sunset Paradise" in June 2020. Off the EP, "Back to Basics" is a great way to get know his innate talent.

"Back to the Basics" by Joseph Milauskas, from his pop album Sunset Paradise, will have your heart soaring with it's heartfelt lyrics and exceptional performance. The song is introduced with a clear resonating electric guitar that echoes in the distance as Josephs's crystal smooth and radio-ready vocals enter to sing a story about love and loss.

The doubling in the vocals during the chorus and the exquisite layering of electric guitars melodies add a powerful and dynamic harmonic structure to the song while deep thunderous drums resonate through the verses as the vocal melody slowly progresses into the chorus. "Back to the Basics" is a well-conceived and produced song with a stellar pop rock arrangement that is energized by a robust sound mix and pristine master.

Relationships are complicated. Sometimes things don't end the way you wish they would have, and there is a lack of closure with a lasting internal longing for the way it used to be. Joseph's song reflects this emotion with the story of a past relationship and the pain he felt when the relationship ended. "Back to the Basics" wants to go back to the simple beginning of how it feels when you first fall in love. Lyrically, the concept is universal and easy to relate to. Joseph sings the catchy chorus that gets stuck in your head (in a good way):

“I didn’t know, I didn’t know, we were still growing.

We were so young when we fell in love.

We were just on the way, not at the destination.

I think it’s time to take it back to the basics,

back, back, back, back, back to the basic.”

Joseph Milauskas is a multi-talented and ingenious artist who can write, produce, mix, and master his own music. In "Back to Basics", he creates an emotional connection with a vulnerable and honest performance of his experience, connecting fans to his authenticity. With a style that is both reflective and roaring, "Back to the Basics" hits it at the core of what a great heartbreak love ballad is all about - raw emotion and a real human experience that everyone can relate to.
