Hunter and the Wick'd - Interview

The W.A M. Awards celebrate the year’s most outstanding independent artists from around the world in multiple genres and categories. "Best Song" and "Best Album" nominations were based on Artistry, Musicianship, Originality, Professionalism, Diversity, and Excellence. W.A.M. stands for "We Are the Music Makers.' Hunter and the Wick'd's Song "I Don't Wanna Talk Right Now " was the 2020 W.A.M. Award Winner for Best Love Song.

What got you into music?

Music was all around me as a child. My dad was into jazz and my mom loved gospel, as well as country western and classical music won my heart. Music was integral to our family life and the communities that we mingled with.

What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, recording, something else?) Tell us why.

For me, Miri, my favorite is writing and producing/arranging in the studio. For Thom, I think his favorite is rehearsal and performance.

Can you tell us what being in the recording studio is like for you?

I love working with different musicians and seeing how a song affects them and hopefully how the music inspires them to become part of the creative process. Then I love the process of mixing, highlighting each musician’s best performance in service to the song.

As a songwriter or musician, are there any obstacles you have had to overcome or obstacles that you are facing right now in your career?

As a musician and songwriter, the obstacles are just in finding ways to continue. Venues are closed, so that cuts out income and visibility. So I guess it is an optimal time to create. And that can become difficult, if one shuts down In order to keep out too much of the political, social noise...…some of the noise has to come through.

To date, what do you think your best song is? Can you describe the song for us?

“I Don’t Wanna Talk Right Now.” It was written in one sitting and I felt every difficult emotion in it. But right now, I love “Living on the Fringe.” It was written for a Fringe Theatre Festival, that I co -produce, but it has since become an anthem for this current time. It has a very universal concept, because in many ways many of us are all living on the fringe of the unknown. I court Lady Luck she knows my real name Lost with the wind, the edge is everything Though my heart is aching I’m ready for anything You say,

do! New design, new recording and lots of writing, always on the look out for performance avenues...

About Hunter and the Wick'd

Hunter and the Wick’d is a Southern California based Americana duo. Its members consist of Virginia native, Miri Hunter and California native, Thom Merrick. After playing together for several years, they released their first recording together. The recording explores country/desert melodies and brings them into a contemporary folk style. There’s a wealth of beautiful music and songs explored on their debut album. Over the journey, the band has had some local hits, many of which are included in this CD collection. If music lovers have been waiting or a recording of “Tumbleweed Connection” or “Dance All Night in California,” and “I Don’t Wanna Talk Right Now,” here’s your chance. “This music is all about giving yourself up to the wisdom and creativity that the desert imparts to you…at whatever emotional and spiritual cost. Thom and I come from varying musical traditions. He grew up during the punk music era and I grew up trained as a classical pianist. Within the realm of music, we unite as a team to create a montage that is representative of Americana music influenced by desert dreams,” states Miri. They are currently had at work on their music collection. After receiving this year’s W.A.M.
