Emily Cole - 'Unnerving'
Review by By Matt Wong & Staff
“Unnerving” is a song by alternative pop singer/songwriter Emily Cole. The song begins with a synth pad, and an oscillating synth bass. Cole’s hypnotic vocals enter on the first verse, along with percussion accenting the back beat. The song’s chorus introduces the full beat, as well as well executed background vocals which effectively emphasizes and enhances Cole’s lead vocals.
Interesting melodic synth lines can be also be heard, which provide ear candy for listeners. The chorus gradually builds, and more synth layers are introduced, which support song’s laid back and infectious groove.
The lyrics in “Unnerving,” are to the point and are about people who cause one to lose confidence. Lyrics such as “Had to cut the cord, you’re jealous, envy” and “guys like you are so unnerving” outline this problem. However, Cole also sings “I won’t let your demons take my soul,” which is about moving on. In a sense the message is that you don't have to allow someone else's issues unnerve you as their issues belong to them,
“Unnerving” by Emily Cole showcases Emily Cole's star talent. It is one of many well written and produced songs by Cole who is one of the best young independent artists in the country. Cole is not only a talented songwriter, but also an outstanding vocalist with a unique pop sound. With music like this, it is without a doubt that Cole’s success will increase exponentially, and she will continue taking the pop music scene by storm. Emily Cole is an artist to watch.
