Deanna Demola - "Next Generation"

BWH Music Group and World National Indie Radio (WNIR) are hosting 'Songs For Change' radio special during the month of November. Music can influence, and even change, people, movements, and society. Sharing songs about peace and social justice, will ultimately remind the world of the importance of peace, fairness, love and unity. Deanna DeMola's song "Next Generation" is one of the amazing songs that will be featured on this special radio program.
There is a pristine quality to singer/songwriter Deanna DeMola’s voice. It is both honest and vulnerable and yet, harbors this composed sense of conviction as she takes me through the synth laded “Next Generation”.
Amidst the electronic instrumentation, sparse clean guitars and processed string sections, there is a blanket of vocal layering that almost doubles as a synth in its own right. Everything is very clean and synthetic which provides a nice contrast to the warmth of DeMola’s vocals. The chorus is undeniably catchy and will be with you for the rest of the day as soon as you listen.
Being that this is a pop tune, the voice and message are without a doubt the focal point. Upon first listen, I got the impression of a voice of a generation who is fed up with being told how things are. That there is only one way.
Lyrics that struck me in particular was the line,
“In a world designed to kill our creativity, cleanse our brains through your fictional reality. I doubt you’ll be the one who saves the day.”
Speaking as a musician who’s spent almost 20 years in the industry, this line says it all to me personally. I think it brilliantly captures the very real struggle that creatives of any kind go up against when dealing with the popular opinion of what’s considered to be social norms. Of course, I think that Deanna’s message was most likely written to be more inclusive in scope than my own biased opinion about the practical world vs the creative world, but I guess the point that I’m trying to make is that I immediately resonated with her lyrics as soon as I heard them. Something I feel that anyone who checks out “Next Generation” will discover once they push play.
I don’t doubt that many things can be read into the lyrics depending on the line while lines like “On the surface, picture perfect’s what you see. How we’re privileged, have such animosity. Prescription pills you prescribe to numb all our pain” are much more to the point and thought provoking. The tone of the song is both sad and optimistic. It’s really cool to hear a pop song with substance. More artists in the genre would do well to follow suit.
In short, if you’re a Billie Eilish, Paramore, or Halsey, fan and like music that addresses personal and social challenges, then Deanna’s music should be added to your play list.
