Dave Molter - 'It Was You'

Review by Patrick Joseph & Staff

“It was You” is a breath of fresh air. Simultaneously modern and timeless, this is music that everyone can appreciate. Listeners will love its swinging groove and “feel good” emotional tone. Soaring back-up vocals and a powerful drum track sit underneath a clean and momentous melody. Interesting timbres float in and out of the song, adding depth and detail to a sonic world. An ultra-catchy chorus and pointed lyrics round out a great song.

Lyrically, “It Was You” is an example of a pure love song: “It was you, who swept me off my feet, made my life complete, it was you.” The clarity of the message is matched by a command over the instrumental track. The music matches these lyrics beautifully. “I stumbled around head in the sky feet on the ground, I was so down didn’t know how to turn it around who came through.” Molter shows impressive command over both lyric and music composition in this song.

There are many Beatles-esque elements to this song, not the least of which is the arrangement. When least expected, a bridge comes out of nowhere and elevates the song with rhythmic hits and powerful horn lines. Experimental and fun synth sounds add another dimension to the song. Listeners will detect quality in this track instantaneously. Molter’s confident vocals fly over an expertly crafted track. “It was You” sounds like the execution of a singular, mature artistic voice.
