Barry Rock - 'Miles Away'

Barry Rock is a singer/songwriter and instrumentalist who has perfected the art of writing a great catchy chorus that gets stuck in your head. Born and raised in NY, Barry majored in acting at community college and played in bands throughout his college years where he developed a magnetic stage presence. He went on to start and own a DJ Entertainment Company, working weddings and corporate events. From 2008-2012 Barry moved to LA where he picked up the vibe of west coast music.

Barry currently has two singles out. Check out his review of "We Should See it Through" on Please Pass the Indie. "We Should See it Through" will entrance you with acoustic guitar, gentle vocals, and a powerful chorus. His other single "Miles Away" also showcases Barry's triple talent as a singer, songwriter, and musician and his knack for writing contagious songs.

“Miles Away” beings with a melodic intro on wailing, distorted electric guitar that breaks down into layers of rhythmic strumming accompanied by bass. Barry takes the forefront creating a classic radio-rock-pop sound with his performance. The melodies seem to flow effortlessly from this singer-songwriter. The drums enter along with light background vocals and rich saxophone melodies as Barry sings,

“Things weren’t right/ It’s been 26 long days since we had that stupid fight and baby/ Calling your name/miles away, miles away/Nothing left to say/miles away, miles away.”

"Miles Away" is about wanting to break free from playing games with the heart. It's about putting aside differences and not focusing on who was right or who was wrong. This is a universal theme that everyone can relate to. Sometimes, there's nothing left to say after a fight and you feel miles away.

As the song progresses, the saxophone continues to add embellishments throughout the verses, contrasting the rhythmic sections with legato melodies. With additional vocal harmonies, the arrangement will catch listener’s ears as it steadily builds with each passing section. Briefly taking the spotlight, a smooth electric guitar solo drives an instrumental break before kicking back into gear with Barry’s vocals.

“Miles Away” is an energetic love song with a classic sound derivative of artists like Billy Joel and The Beach Boys making for easy listening. Barry excels at his craft; he writes catching hooks that stay with you love after you hear them with lyrics that put honest emotions into song.
