Annemarie Picerno - "Color Blind"

Reviewed by Matt Wong & Staff

“Color Blind” begins with a guitar solo full of soul and emotion. Supported by rhythm guitar, bass, and drums, the guitar solo sets up the song up with energy and intensity for Picerno’s entrance on the first verse. As the song makes its way through the first verse, the laid back, yet tight groove continues while the lead guitar slips in and out with tasty licks in between vocal phrases.

The song’s arrival at the chorus is grand and pronounced and takes the listener to a musical high. Background vocals and a synth part are added to the mix, which add thickness to the arrangement. After another verse and chorus, the song launches into another fiery guitar solo. Coming out the solo, listeners are presented with a bridge that nicely breaks up the song form before the song returns and ends with one final chorus.

The lyrics in “Color Blind” use love, kindness, hate, and greed as metaphors to describe “human colors” as one’s outwards appearance does not reflect their value or being in this massive world. The lyrics emphasize the adage of not judging a book by its cover, and to dig deep and examine people’s hearts and minds instead. They also encourage us to love, make change through kindness, and accept diversity in our society.

“Color Blind” by Annmarie Picerno is a well written and powerful song. The melody is highly memorable, and the lyrics are meaningful. The song’s blues rock groove, delivered by an A-level rhythm section sets the perfect stage for Picerno’s commanding vocals to shine and connect with listeners. Produced by Bob McGilpin, Picerno’s song is an example of music that is impactful and much needed in our lives.
