The Varmoors - 'Red Dress Damsel'

The Varmoors are a fun, jamming Indie-Rock band from Calgery, AB. Featuring five members Nick Styles (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Colin Hendrickson (Lead Guitar/vocals), Matthew VanHuysteen (Drums), Cam Duncan (Rhythm Guitar), and Ben Pollock (Bass). The Varmoors bring a whole lot of energy and charisma to the table; the band is all about musical fusion, having a great time and connecting with their fans. Giving off a 60’s and 70’s feel-good vibe with classic rock elements, the Varmoors have festival appeal. Their single, “Red Dress Damsel” is a perfect introduction to The Varmoors' sound.

“Red Dress Damsel” kicks off with a fun melodic guitar riff that starts off acoustically then leads into a full band arrangement before breaking into the first verse. Singer Nick Sytles enters with strong vocals that have good edge and character; the vocals are placed perfectly above the mix. "I walk down to the beach yeah, hoping you’ll see me. I’ve got no shoes on my feet, yeah I like to be free." This track is an up-tempo jam that’s fun and energetic. Lyrically, the song talks about perusing a girl and cutting right to the chase as spelled out in the bridge. "Lets cut to the chase babe. Lets go to your place babe. There's no time to waste. There's no time or space. Let me be your king and ace." In the pre-chorus, Nick sings, “She’s a, Red headed gypsy freak yeah and shes lookin at me,” building up to he chorus that has additional vocal harmonies, “She puts on that red dress. I don’t know why. Shes got no one to impress. Come on baby lets ride.” The lyrics in "Red Dress Damsel" are simple, free-styling, and catchy making the song an easy ride to listen to, something that everyone can relate to. Towards the end of the song, there is tasteful guitar solo played by Colin Hendrickson.

Red Dress Damsel” showcases the raw, unfiltered and pure rock sound that The Varmoors bring to the table; they have the kind of sound that attracts festival goers. This is a band that you want to listen to and have a beer with as they offer up a sound that makes you feel like you're part of the party. The Varmoors show that they have true band chemistry; they are inviting and engaging. Band chemistry is something that is often overlooked, but you can hear when a band clicks together. As the Varmoors have been friends since grade school, their playing is tight with great stage presence; listeners get the sense that these guys are having a really good time and in turn, you can't help but have a good time with them.
